Pocket Horology
National Research Ch. 174
NAWCC
February 20, 1998
NAWCC Florida Midwinter Regional in Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Meeting Highlights
by Clint Geller, Chapter 174 Secretary
Approximately thirty members and friends of the Pocket Horology Chapter # 174 met on
Friday evening, February 20 during the Florida Midwinter Regional in Ft. Lauderdale. The
short business meeting chaired by Vice President Greg Frauenhoff featured discussions of
several exciting chapter projects, including the image database project; the special
exhibit and symposium on the early American watchmaking industry to be held at the NAWCC
HQ Museum; and the Chapter 174 exhibit at the upcoming national convention. A brief break
followed the business meeting during which liquid refreshments were enjoyed.
Our featured speaker was renowned horological illustrator and editor (and Chapter 174
member) Mr. David Penney who gave a well received presentation entitled "The Name on
a Watch," about the relationships among the many trades within the English
watchmaking industry and how they collaborated to produce watches. The complete text of
Davids talk is available in our May, 1998 Chapter newsletter (Issue #2). A
show-and-tell followed the formal presentation.
Chapter 174 will meet next during the NAWCC National Convention in Portland, Oregon
this June, where chapter member Tom McIntyre will speak on early American watches. The 86
current members of Pocket Horology Chapter 174, a national research chapter dedicated to
horological research on pocket watches both domestic and foreign, invite you to join us.
Additional information about our chapter can be obtained by writing to or calling the
Chapter Secretary, Clint Geller at 6347 Ebdy Street, Pittsburgh PA 15217 (412-521-8092,
evenings and weekends) or via the internet at the Chapter 174 web page that is linked to
the NAWCC National HQ home page. To join Chapter 174, enclose a check made out to
"Pocket Horology" for your one-time $25 regular membership fee, or $50 for a
sustaining membership and mail it to the address above. Subsequent annual dues are $10 for
either class of membership.

Meeting Announcement
from Clint Geller
Chapter Meeting: The next meeting of the Pocket Horology Chapter #174 will take
place during the NAWCC Florida Midwinter Regional in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, on Friday,
February 20, 1998 at 8:30 P.M. in the Causeway Room of the Embassy Suites Hotel. Following
a short business meeting, we will have our featured presentation and a Show-and-Tell.
Chapter members wishing to bring up new items during the business meeting should contact
Greg Frauenhoff or myself prior to the meeting. Liquid refreshments will be served.
Featured Speaker: Our featured speaker is fellow Chapter 174 member and noted
horological editor and illustrator Mr. David Penney. Davids presentation is
entitled: "The Name on a Watch: What Does it Mean?" Collectors of American
watches usually can have a pretty good idea of the relationship between a watch and the
name it bears, since American watch movements generally were manufactured under one roof
in integrated, largely self-sufficient factories. This simple picture does not apply to
watches made in England, where labor and industrial organization had their own unique
characteristics. David will discuss how and by whom English watches were made and the
nature of the relationship that a person whose name appears on an English watch may
actually have had to its creation.
I hope to see you all in Ft. Lauderdale!
